Reaction of the Senegal community following the racist murder (Florence 2011)
On the 13th December 2011 the Italian city of Florence was subject to a tragic event. A man, apparently a Casapound sympathizer, an Italian far-right organization, attempted the lives of two young Senegalese men, Mor and Modou, killing them both in cold blood as if an execution. He struck the first two victims down with a firearm in Piazza Dalmazia, a densely populated area, then two and a half hours later he directed himself into the crowded market of San Lorenzo and tried to shed more blood. This brought to another three people being seriously injured. The killer shortly after took his own life in the underground car park below the central market of San Lorenzo.
Later that day the Senegal community marched in procession through the streets of the old town to speak out against the abuses and the spread of xenophobic and racist ideologies among the people, stirred by a policy of terror. |
